Attica Blues

Charlie Dark MBE remains one of the UK’s key cultural innovators. He founded the original “Blacktronica” movement (1999–2005), a platform that foregrounded Black innovation across multiple forms of high art while creating space for emerging UK artists in particular. The gatherings began at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London before moving to the influential Plastic People venue for the remainder of its run. In 2020, Professor King Britt carried that lineage into academia, positioning Blacktronika within institutional conversations around experimental art and Black cultural practice where it equally belongs.

Charlie later founded Run Dem Crew, one of the defining collectives of his career. Centered around running, community, and care, the crew was initially rooted in communities of color while remaining open to everyone entering its orbit. The project’s cultural impact led to Charlie receiving an MBE from the British Royal Family, while also establishing him as a global ambassador for Lululemon.

Prior to this movement, Charlie joined Roba El Essawy and Tony Nwachukwu to form the groundbreaking trip hop group Attica Blues in 1994. With roots connected to Ghana, Egypt, and Nigeria, the trio embodied the African diaspora both physically and sonically. Their self-titled debut on the forward-thinking Mo’ Wax label helped establish a template for much of the trip hop movement that followed: rugged hip hop rhythms, experimental sampling, and haunting vocal textures. Attica Blues, alongside Portishead and many others, helped define the form itself , the Blueprint! (IYKYK). After releasing two albums, the members eventually moved toward individual creative paths.

In this 2020 Blacktronika interview, Professor Britt reunited Attica Blues for a raw and deeply personal conversation reflecting on a period that often sits outside the dominant historical narrative. The interview also includes Dego from 4Hero, Lady Alma and MoWax label don, James Lavelle in a roundtable discussion.

Also included is a 2024 conversation with Charlie revisiting the origins of the original Blacktronica movement.

Lastly, included are links to Charlie’s recent Listening Room Sessions.
