Herbie Hancock
(Fall 2023)
Chicago-born Herbie Hancock stands as a seminal figure in the evolution of Black musical expression. Traversing genres from Bebop and Fusion to Funk and Hip Hop, Hancock has consistently embodied a spirit of curiosity and sonic innovation, all while remaining deeply grounded in his foundational musical roots.
Across his diverse body of work, Hancock has revealed multiple dimensions of his artistic identity. His collaborations with luminaries such as Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter, the Afrocentric themes of his fusion ensemble Mwandishi, the rhythmic intensity of Headhunters’ funk, and his ventures into electronic-infused Hip Hop, all reflect a sustained engagement with both musical tradition and technological advancement. Indeed, electronic instrumentation has served as a throughline in his career, fundamentally reshaping how sound is interpreted and experienced. From the Fender Rhodes and ARP 2600 to the Minimoog and Fairlight, Hancock has consistently been at the vanguard of musical experimentation.
In this interview, recorded on January 8, 2023, we are offered a rare window into the mind and creative process of a true master teacher and musical Icon.
